Falkirk Science Festival – take part!
Falkirk Science Festival is this year putting on an event focusing on menopause. It will take place on Sunday 11th May in Grangemouth Town Hall where there will be stalls open from 10am – 4pm to view, and a range of workshops from breathwork, to a discussion panel and excitingly, singing through menopause! You can see the event information here: https://www.falkirkleisureandculture.org/whats-on/menopausal-what-s-your-superpower/ and a full programme of workshops will be published soon. I hope to see some of you there so we can sing together again!
If you can’t make it along on the day, I’d still like to invite you to take part. I’ll be running a Singing Through Menopause stall at the event where I’ll have a set of mystery voice boxes. Attendees will be asked to pick a question from the box and write down their experience of voice use and voice change in response. Those who share their thoughts will be invited to take a lucky dip into the boxes and read experiences from other participants and hear other stories of menopausal voice change. If you’d like to respond to a question and take a lucky dip yourself, then head to the mystery box form here: https://forms.gle/AwRymnBk8dxtE6uG7
Interviews with menopausal voice-users
As you might have notice on social media, over the last couple of months, I’ve been recruiting menopausal voice users to interview about the ways they use their voice in their work and hobbies. We’ve spoken about how their voice has changed during menopause, and the strategies they’ve used to work through these changes. I’ve spoken to choral singers, actors, lecturers, teachers, professional singers, and many others. During the course of the chats, I’ve been struck by the range of experiences discussed – no two interviews have been the same, we really are all on very different journeys through menopause voice change. Some folks have told me that they’ve found the process extremely challenging, and this has put them off singing or speaking as much as they used to. Others have found that they feel more attuned to their voice now or that they are exploring a whole new range of repertoire and ways of using their voice. We’ve discussed vocal exercises, singing through straws, changing repertoire, psychological and mental health challenges, and feelings of identity change that accompany menopausal voice.
I plan to keep speaking to more people over the next few months to gather as many accounts of these experiences as possible. Once I’ve completed interviews, I’ll be gathering the information together, looking for common experiences and useful strategies for managing change, and producing resources to be shared widely with other menopausal singers and speakers.
If you use your voice in your hobbies or work (as a singer, speaker, lecturer, teacher, actor or in another role) and you would be happy to speak to me about your experience of menopausal voice change, I’d love to chat to you!
